Taylor Swift Denounces 2020 US Census For Excluding Trans, Nonbinary People

Taylor Swift is fighting against the erasure of transgender and nonbinary people.

The singer-songwriter took a stance on Friday (July 3) during Pride Live’s Stonewall Day livestream event when she condemned the United States Census for offering only two options for gender. Alongside Swift, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and more stars also spoke during the annual broadcast, which observes the 1969 Stonewall uprising that helped spark the gay rights movement.

Swift started her segment applauding last week’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to keep LGBTQ people protected from workplace discrimination. “We had a really good step forward recently with the Supreme Court ruling based on discrimination, based on sex,” she said. “But we still have so far to go in terms of equality and protections for LGBTQ people and people in the trans community,’ Swift said in her segment.”

After urging for the Equality Act — which has not passed congress — Swift also expressed her disappointment in how this year’s U.S. Census neglected members of the LGBTQ community. “I got my Census the other day and there were two choices for gender. There was male and female and that erasure was so upsetting to me, the erasure of transgender and nonbinary people,” she explained. “When you don’t collect information on a group of people, that means that you have every excuse in the world not to support them. When you don’t collect data on a community, that’s a really, really brutal way of dismissing them.”

Ending her livestream segment on an uplifting note, Swift encouraged to exercise their vote. “Obviously, we all need to exercise our right to vote this year,” she urged. “We need to check out our absentee ballot policy in our states and we need to make sure that we elect people who care about all communities.”
