Ian Holm, star of Lord of the Rings, Alien and Chariots of Fire, dies at 88

This is unfortunate news. Actor Ian Holm known for his role as Bilbo Baggins in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit died Friday morning.

The cause of death was shared by his agent as the end of a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Holm has an extensive and successful career including winning a Tony Award in 1967 for his role as Lenny in The Homecoming. He also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for playing coach in Chariots of Fir (1981).

His first major role was in 1979 in Alien.
