Hurricanes withdraw from Sun Bowl, end season due to COVID-19 issues

The Miami Hurricanes announced Sunday they will not take part in Friday's Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game due to COVID-19 protocols.

Miami went into COVID-19 protocols last Tuesday, but the team did not say how many players or coaches were dealing with virus-related issues.

The team was scheduled to resume practice this week to prepare for Friday's bowl game against Washington State in El Paso, Texas.

Sunday's announcement means the 2021 football season is officially over for the Hurricanes.

Deputy Director of Athletics Jennifer Strawley made the announcement, saying in a statement "due to the number of COVID-19 cases impacting our roster we do not have enough student-athletes to safely compete, and the health and safety of our student-athletes will always be our top priority."

Miami finishes the season with a 7-5 record, including wins in five of their last six games under former head coach Manny Diaz.

Diaz was fired in December and replaced by former Hurricanes player and Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal.

Sunday's announcement comes hours after the Military Bowl and Fenway Bowl were cancelled due to COVID-19 issues.

The Military Bowl was scheduled for Monday between Boston College and East Carolina, and the Fenway Bowl was set for Thursday between Virginia and SMU; however Boston College and Virginia are dealing with COVID-19 issues, causing the schools to withdraw from their respective bowl games.

On Friday, the Hawaii Bowl became the first bowl game of the 2021 season to be cancelled due to COVID-19 issues within Hawaii's program.
