FIU Students Start Petition Responding To In-Person Graduation Decision

When it comes to what can and can’t be open, capacity and travel the news/rules are ever changing. The important thing is that we stay safe!

With that said I hate for anyone to miss a big moment like graduation. If you can have people in attendance for sporting events maybe the school can figure out a way to make graduations happen. A friend of mine told me about his son’s high school football game experience where space was limited and everyone was socially distant and so far it’s worked out.

According to the Miami New Times article: Last month, the Florida Board of Governors — the body that runs all public universities in the state — directed state universities to come up with "alternate plans" for fall 2020 commencement ceremonies in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Close to 5,000 students have signed the petition asking FIU to reconsider. The petition titled “In-person, socially distanced graduation for FIU Class of 2020”

The online petition states: On September 25th, 2020, FIU Commencement sent out an email telling it's upcoming graduates that our graduation will be held virtually, just as it was in the spring and summer of 2020. Here's the problem-- on September 28th, 2020, FIU External Relations sent out an email to the entire FIU community stating that they will be hosting socially distanced football games with priority seating for 1,900 students. We aren't asking to host an inside graduation that goes against CDC guidelines. We are simply asking for an accommodation.
